SPATIAL DECONSTRUCTION #28 (THE GRID), 8 PALMERSTON CRESCENT, SOUTH MELBOURNE, ARTS PRECINCT

Concept for SPATIAL DECONSTRUCTION #28 (THE GRID), 12 X 32 METRES X variable depth up to 1 metre, synthetic polymer paint on precast, powder coated steel, RGB light emitting diodes, fixings

In 2021, Coulter was selected as the successful artist with her winning concept for the Matthews Lane Artwork. A 32 metre spatial deconstruction artwork with integrated facade geodes and lighting. Approved through the city of Port Phillips’ percent for public art policy, the property developer, and the architect Elenberg Fraser.

‘spatial deconstruction #28 (the grid)’, by Coulter, uses the reference point of the building grid, through a rules based approach to generate organic geometric patterns, activated though Coulter's highly chromatic palette. Ideas about the grid relate simultaneously to both the history of art, architectural organisation, and the urban planning of Melbourne. Control and order is dispersed by geometric facade sculptures which grown out of the work, and offer a transitional environment in relation to the time of day, through light activation in darkness.

Whilst the building was under construction, a huge three sided reproduction of Coulters artwork, could be seen from Kings Way, being raised up on site each time a new concrete building level was poured.

Unfortunately the project was put on hold after design development, and remains unrealised.
