BURT HEALY PAVILION, Malvern East, Melbourne, Australia.
Curated by Jade Bitar

The artist was invited by the City of Stonington, to create this site specific work, to contemplate disused and uninviting space in the community.

Located in a transitional space to the rear of a built community structure, in between in Malvern East Station and Waverly Oval, this work aims to activate the space by inserting an unexpected highly chromatic geometric intervention onto the surface of an everyday community building.

The title ‘cutout’ refers to the process of creating a cut-out sculptural shape in this location. Through a process of addition and subtraction, the artist, created this sculptural intervention, elevating this transitory space, into a marker for the community.

Coulter is particularly interested in underutilized transitory spaces, and how these spaces and the daily journey of people might be made more meaningful through the transformative power of public art.
