VCA 9X5, 2017
Margaret Lawrence Gallery, Southbank
Curated by Elizabeth Gower

In celebration of 150 years of art, 300 VCA Alumni artists were invited to create a work on a 9 x 5 inch board.

The ‘9x5’ title references the original exhibition of impressionist works held at the Buxton Galleries in Melbourne in 1889. That exhibition included works from key Australian impressionist artists such as Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Frederick McCubbin and Charles Condor, who were all graduates of the National Gallery of Victoria Art School. The artworks were painted on cigar box lids and the title of the exhibition is derived from the dimensions of those works (nine inches by five inches).

Each contributing artist to 9x5 NOW was sent a nine-by-five-inch plywood board to make their work for the 150 year anniversary exhibition.
