The title of this painting, ‘mystical grid’, refers to the use of ‘the grid’ as an organisational and conceptual device, throughout the history of art. As a structural device the grid is both rational and mystical, whilst also being intangible. In this work Coulter’s use of the grid is both elusive and deliberate. Whilst being self-referential, the work also refers outward beyond the frame. Formally the work is both sharp and soft, all the while referring to a harmonious sense of connectedness and infinity. Manifest through the arrangement and placement of tessellated geometries executed through Coulters idiosyncratic language of colour.
