PARALLEL STRUCTURES, 2023
Synthetic Polymer Paint on Linen
167 x 167 x 3.2cm
The title ‘parallel structures’, makes reference to the idea that art can mirror society and its social fabric through abstract forms.
Continuing Coulter’s interest in the underlying organisational structure of the grid, and how it may be abstracted, ‘parallel structures’, uses the reference point of the grid, to generate multichromatic, organic, tessellations.
In this work Coulter’s use of the grid is both elusive and deliberate. Whilst being self-referential, the work also refers outward beyond the frame of the canvas, through a sense of infinite space and repetition.
Geometric colour studies of this work formed the basis for a large scale ephemeral building work in Melbourne.
