STILL LIFE, 2023
Synthetic Polymer Paint on Linen
102 X 102 x 3.2cm

Taking abstraction as the non-traditional subject matter of a still life painting, Coulter reverses the usual paradigm, through the composition of shape, colour and geometric form. The work is ambiguously layered, as to call into question the flatness of depth in the painting, and our perception of what is foreground, and background. The still life almost appears in plan view, as if it may be a horizontal display of map of an urban landscape, buildings or playground, whilst simultaneously making reference to frontal vertical shapes that appear to relate to nature or the urban environment.
