SPECTRUM WARP #1, 2021
Synthetic Polymer Paint on Linen
153 x 121 x 3.2cm
Coulter works with colour in a serial way, through a refined colour palette; creating the artist’s own bold, idiosyncratic, spectrum.
The ‘spectrum warp’ series, are a succession of autonomous flat paintings supported on traditional painting stretchers. This series of paintings relate to Coulter’s colossal site-specific Melbourne public art commission, which was insitu in the CBD, throughout the global pandemic of 2020 to 2022.
These independent paintings explore the dynamism of Coulter’s colour palette in conjunction with warped, geometric, compositional structures. Within this self-contained series, saturated hues are carefully placed in similar patterns and geometric test sequences. The rules for order are informed by the boundary of the two-dimensional surface of the autonomous picture plane.
Finalist in Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2021.
