BURNETT LANE, BRISBANE
Commissioned by Challenger Property

The artist was invited to create a site specific work to activate the rear entry of the Bookstore with the lane at this site. One of the few lanes in Brisbane, Burnett Lane is renowned for it’s ‘street art’ and murals.

The gritty character of the laneway, required a strong response, with many competing visual elements and the nature of the lane providing amenity to all of the cafes and retail stores, as well as taking into consideration that many displaced people may use this space as a shelter.

My response, ‘spatial deconstruction #23 (rainbow shelter)’, intends to reinterpret the architecture as a shelter to the laneway, an open non- hierarchical space, where all members of the community can seek refuge, through the visual and lyrical sensation of colour.
